Oxfam Ireland is pleased to present Haiti Lives – a photography exhibition inspired by the unyielding spirit of the Haitian people. Launching in the Centre on Wednesday 30th June to coincide with the six month anniversary, since the disaster. The exhibition captures their daily lives in the aftermath of January 2010’s devastating earthquake.
The exhibition comprises of 30 images by award-winning American photojournalist Ami Vitale; Jane Beesley, who works as a specialist communications officer for Oxfam covering both sudden and ongoing humanitarian crises and Jorge Silva from Reuters. Best known for her cultural documentation, Ami Vitale has received recognition from world press photos; Photographer of the Year International, The Lucie Awards and the South Asian Journalists Association presented her with the Daniel Pearl Award for outstanding reporting. She has been named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers. The earthquake that struck Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, killed an estimated 230,000 people, left more than one million others homeless and much of the capital. Port-au-Prince in ruins. These remarkable images depict how Oxfam’s work in Haiti is helping people to re-build their lives.
Also on display in the Centre will be the Oxfam home Do it Yourself Collection. Oxfam approached Angela Scanlon (stylist and journalist) Blanaid Hennessy (Irish Independent journalist & stylist), Eoin Lyons (Interior Designer & Journalist), Dara Flynn (Editor of House & Home & Journalist with the Sunday Times) and Kevin Sharkey (Artist) to take a piece of furniture from Oxfam Home, re-upholster it, add a little TLC, and essentially transform a formerly unattractive item into a statement piece of furniture.
The Exhibition is on display in Powerscourt from 30th June – 31st July.
